The Coaching Blog

Or is it a glorified "to-do" list?

Before a big game, winning teams and their coach always sit down to create their "game plan". Who will do what, when and how. This is created with a single aim in mind: in the game, we need to know what we'll be doing, to increase our chances of winning. It's time-bound (for this one game), it's clear (who is responsible in which area of the field and for what play), and it's a strategic plan, not a list of tasks (which would look more like "get ball", "pass" and "score").

When it comes to business, there are three main approaches that I've seen. The first is the "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it" mindset. The business owners that don't plan, don't want to plan and don't believe in planning. If a sports team - whose actions will largely be influenced by the actions of the other team - still have a plan, there has to be some degree of "planability" in the business, no matter what industry.

The second is when the business is still being run like a start-up, with long "to-do" lists that masquerade as plans. Task lists are not the same as a clear, concrete action plan. The first are those activities that need to be done to run the business. The second is a list of strategies that will help grow the business.

The third approach, and I'm sure you're ahead of me, is the one that typically shows the best results. This is when there is a clear, structured, time-bound plan outlining what strategies are going to be implemented, who is responsible to effect the change, by when it will be done, and what the outcome is expected to be. This takes time and focus to create...you wouldn't haphazardly and half-heartedly plan your holiday, and since it's the business that is paying for the holiday, it's worth investing the time. We've repeatedly seen that the clients that plan diligently have the biggest growth in their firms.

If you'd rather take either of the first approaches, I wish you the best of luck. If creating a winning plan to achieve a winning quarter is more your thing, I'll definitely want to work with you on your plans at the next GrowthCLUB. We're planning a fantastic Q2 on the 26th of March, and if you want to find out more, click here.

To your success, this quarter and every quarter,
